Rachel Cravit

I'm a web developer, designer and recent graduate of Bitmaker, a web development school in Toronto. Prior to jumping into the tech industry, I worked for 5 years as a professional blogger and social media strategist while dabbling in website design on the side.

Although women are still vastly outnumbered by men in the tech industry, this isn't my first time being part of the minority. In 2008, I enrolled at York University, unaware of the rampant anti-Israel sentiment on campus. I eventually decided not to continue my studies at York and left a couple years later, but that experience changed me from a passive Zionist into a pro-Israel activist.

I went to Israel for the first time on Birthright in 2008 and returned in 2010 on a leadership trip with CAMERA: Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America. Afterwards, I stayed on to complete a six month MASA internship program, Career Israel. During this time, I interned at StandWithUs in Jerusalem, where I was responsible for managing the organization's social media and creating educational content pertaining to the Israeli-Arab conflict. Following my internship, I moved to Tel Aviv, where I lived for a year and a half before returning to Canada in 2012.

Although I no longer live in Israel, it remains a very big part of my life. Many of my closest friends still live there and my younger brother made aliyah last year and joined the IDF.
Fortunately, the tech industry is much more excited about Israel than the world of academia. I hope, through my work, I am able to help encourage strong ties between the world-class tech communities in Toronto and Tel Aviv.
